Where propane gets refilled
Most refills happen at four kinds of places. U-Haul stores fill cylinders and RV tanks at 1,168 locations and are usually open seven days. Tractor Supply fills tanks at 2,476 farm stores. Propane dealers such as AmeriGas, Ferrellgas, Suburban and Blossman fill at their yards during business hours. Travel centers along interstates, including Love's and Pilot Flying J, run pumps for RVs and autogas vehicles, and a few are open around the clock.
Exchange cages are different: you swap an empty 20 lb tank for a pre-filled one at a grocery, hardware or convenience store. There are far more of them, they cost more per pound, and they are the only option when no refill station is open. More on tank exchange.

Common questions
Where can I refill a propane tank?
The most common places are U-Haul stores, Tractor Supply, propane dealers (AmeriGas, Ferrellgas, Suburban, Blossman and local companies), farm co-ops, and travel centers such as Love's and Pilot Flying J. This site lists 7,906 of them with hours and phone numbers. Enter a ZIP code above to sort them by distance.
What is the difference between a refill and an exchange?
A refill puts propane into the tank you bring, usually charged by the gallon, and a 20 lb grill tank takes about 4.7 gallons. An exchange swaps your empty for a pre-filled tank from a cage, usually with about 15 lb inside. Refills cost less per pound; exchanges are faster and available at 13,269 more locations. Read the comparison.
Are any refill stations open 24 hours?
611 refill locations in the data report 24-hour access, nearly all of them travel centers and autogas pumps. Cylinder filling needs an attendant, so most refill stations keep store hours. Turn on the "Open 24 hours" filter to see the ones near you.
How current is this list?
Station data is pulled every day from the Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Data Center and from the chain store locators collected by All The Places. Each listing shows the date the source last confirmed it where that date is available. If a station has closed or moved, use the Report link on its row.
